Majestic at 170 feet, the Absecon Lighthouse was first illuminated on January 15, 1857. The lighthouse lost its value as a maritime aid when big, new resort hotels obscured its path to the water.

The light and its keepers worked for nearly 76 years until it was decommissioned in 1933. The CRDA, New Jersey Historic Trust, and the State Department of Transportation funded much of the $3.5 million to restore the lighthouse, the head lightkeeper's house, and the lighthouse grounds so that they can function as a tourist attraction. In the tradition established by the long-ago keepers of the light, visitors are beckoned to climb the reopened beacon.
