A piece of Atlantic City architectural and educational history has been restored and preserved. The original Carnegie Library is once again a vital center of activity and learning, thanks to efforts of the CRDA, its gaming industry investors, the City of Atlantic City and the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. With its rehabilitation, the CRDA has restored a link to an important period in American history - when Pittsburgh industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie built thousands of free public libraries all over the world. Now known as the Carnegie Library Center, Atlantic City’s Carnegie Library was built in 1904 in the marble and terra-cotta of the beaux-arts style. It was Atlantic City’s public library for more than 80 years until the library moved to a more modern facility in 1985. The building sat unused until the CRDA acquired it in mid 1990s. The CRDA oversaw a $5 million renovation program, bringing new luster to this historic architectural treasure. Opening in late May 2004, today’s Carnegie Library Center will be Richard Stockton College of New Jersey’s Atlantic City gateway, providing an Atlantic City presence for the college for the first time in over 30 years. The Civil Rights Garden is a tranquil public sculpture garden comprised of 11 granite columns, winding pathways, plants, flowers and Ginko trees. Rich in symbolism, the Civil Rights Garden is a powerful tribute to the architects of the Civil Rights Movement with sculpture inscriptions related to the history, events and people of the Civil Rights Movement. At the center of the Garden is a bronze bell, which chimes throughout the day, and a reflecting pool inscribed with excerpts from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.s "Let Freedom Ring" speech and his Letters from a Birmingham Jail.
